If you think you are having difficulty hearing clearly, you are not alone—as one in six Australians has a hearing loss.

Some early warning signs of hearing loss are:

1.You can hear but not understand.
2.You find it harder to hear in noisy situations with groups of people.
3.You have difficulty understanding people unless they are facing you.
4.You think people mumble.
5.You don’t always hear the doorbell or the phone.
6.You need to turn the TV up louder than other people.

Hearing loss means that some sounds can’t be heard. Other effects of hearing loss that can interfere with listening and communication include loud sounds causing discomfort (reduced dynamic range); particular speech sounds being inaudible (for example, high-pitched sounds like ‘s’ or ‘f’); and difficulty hearing when there is background noise (difficulty separating sounds). It may also be hard to tell where sounds are coming from.

Why is it important to look after your hearing?
A hearing problem can affect your ability to fully enjoy life and result in embarrassment or loss of confidence socially due to difficulties with conversation. It can also leave you at risk of missing important warning sounds, such as traffic or smoke alarms.

If you think you, or a loved one, is experiencing hearing loss, the first step is to have a hearing check. Getting your hearing checked is a simple way to learn more about your hearing and what can be done to help.

It’s painless, takes less than 15 minutes and measures what sounds you can and cannot hear.
